The Vienna Symphony has launched its own label with the release of Mahler’s Symphony No 1 under chief conductor Fabio Luisi, available both on vinyl and CD. As October draws to a close the orchestra will also issue a 1952 recording of Brahms’s First Symphony from the archive, conducted by Sergiu Celibidache.

The label plans to release between two and four discs a year, including live, studio and archive recordings, drawing on a long and distinguished history. Founded in 1900, the Vienna Symphony was shaped by such conductors as Bruno Walter, Wilhelm Furtwängler, George Szell and, later, chief conductors Herbert von Karajan and Wolfgang Sawallisch.

The orchestra’s current season includes a number of highlights. In January Fabio Luisi will conduct seven concerts featuring works by Bruckner, Richard Strauss, Schubert, Stravinsky, and a new work by Gerd Kühr. During the season Philippe Jordan, who succeeds Luisi in 2014, will conduct Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis.
